Bloc Party's 2007 album, A Weekend In The City, starts off quietly. On their first track, "Song For Clay (Disappear Here)," begins with quiet accoustic guitar and vocals, giving the impression that this is going to be just another folk record. That literally couldn't be more wrong, as after about 30 seconds, a wall of guitars and synthesisers comes crashing down, setting the tone for the rest of this high-energy and upbeat album. By the second track, "Hunting For Witches," the album has already hit its stride. Some improvised radio static is used for the rhythm to great effect. But my favourite track is "On." It sounds like an updated version of the Clash, and even manages to include violins and make them sound modern and fresh.
