Melbourne, Australia's The Avalanches made the iconoclast summer album, the ironically titled Since I Left You. Released in 2000, Since I Left You was too good to be true, leading to the irony of their choice in an album title: despite enormous anticipation, there has been no second album. Rumours have emerged, threats have flown, but no amount of cajoling has seemed to produce any results, leaving us with the world's best one-hit wonder. Reportedly produced from over 3500 vinyl samples, Since I Left You is pure mashup. "Radio" is loud, with a great beat that is both catchy and pretty well neigh on impossible to not dance. "Fronteir Psychatrist," the album's lead single, is upbeat. Starting with a sample from the 1981 film Polyester, the song manages to be both catchy and funny. Completing the trifecta, "Etoh" is cheerful. Oh, and I would definitely listen to "Flight Tonight" later on in the evening, wink wink nudge nudge. In an interview shorly after the album's release, Dexter, the lead DJ of The Avalanches, claimed that he listened to "a little bit of everything." Normally, that sounds trite, but in his case, I think it may the dead honest truth.
